Golf Fitness: Train Smart. Swing Strong. Play with Focus

BLOG

By Personal Performance Training

Golf is no ordinary sport. It demands precision, technique, concentration and control – combined with strength, flexibility and endurance. That unique mix makes golf both mentally and physically challenging.

At Personal Performance Training, we believe: train your body smartly, and your swing becomes more stable, your game more consistent, and your focus sharper.

Why I coach golfers

As a personal trainer and avid golfer, I’ve experienced firsthand how much targeted physical training can improve your game. Golf requires body control, mental calm and focused strength. And that’s often where the challenge lies – especially for people with sedentary jobs or limited mobility.

Golf teaches patience, discipline and self-control. At the same time, it puts serious strain on your hips, back, shoulders and wrists. That’s why I specialized in functional golf fitness. My mission? To help golfers play pain-free, stronger, and with more enjoyment.

Whether you're a beginner or a high-level player – your body is your most important club.

The Exercises

1. Rotational Medicine Ball Throws

Start position

Rotational Medicine Ball Throws

End position

An explosive movement that mimics the power and motion of your golf swing.

Why this exercise?

  • Replicates the golf swing in a powerful and controlled way
  • Strengthens core rotational power
  • Improves coordination, timing and explosiveness
  • Increases clubhead speed and distance
  • Balances left- and right-side rotation → injury prevention

Golf application:
More rotational power means more distance without losing control. Perfect for the impact phase of your swing.

2. Walking Lunges (with or without rotation)

Walking Lunges

End position

A powerful swing starts from the ground up. Walking lunges build a strong lower body foundation.

Why this exercise?

  • Strengthens legs, hips, glutes and core
  • Improves balance and body awareness
  • Increases mobility in hips and ankles
  • Corrects left/right muscle imbalances
  • Builds ground-up power transfer to the club

Golf application:
Greater stability during your swing, improved rotation, and more power from your legs in the downswing.

Strong shoulders provide control and prevent injury in your swing.

Why this exercise?

  • Strengthens the deltoids → stable backswing and follow-through
  • Improves posture and upper body control
  • Activates the core in a standing position
  • Reduces risk of shoulder issues
  • Boosts power and precision during impact

Golf application:
Improved club control and reduced injury risk. Every swing feels more confident and precise.

4. Wrist Curls & Reverse Wrist Curls

Wrist Curls

End position

Your grip is your only contact with the club. Strong wrists mean stability and finesse.

Why this exercise?

  • Strengthens forearms and wrists
  • Enhances grip strength – crucial in wet conditions or fatigue
  • Increases swing speed while maintaining control
  • Prevents issues like golfer’s elbow
  • Improves precision in chipping and putting

Golf application:
Stronger wrists give you confidence and finesse – especially in your short game.

Golf = A Mental Sport: Focus, Calm & Confidence

Did you know physical training also sharpens your mental game?

  • Less physical fatigue = more mental clarity
  • A stable core = less fear of injury = more confidence
  • Better posture = deeper breathing = calmer mind
  • Functional strength = power without tension = relaxed play

Golf fitness strengthens both body and mind. You’ll approach each shot with more calm – and play more consistently.

Who is golf fitness for?

  • Beginners wanting to start strong and injury-free
